Pro Tip

Save Jade in Crystalariums all week, then trade it to the Desert Trader on Sundays - one Jade buys one Staircase, turning a lucky day into a dive to floor 100+ for a fraction of the stone cost.

The Mines: 120 Floors in Three Sections

The Mines open on Spring 5, Year 1 and run 120 floors in three themed sections: brown earth (1-39, with a shadow sub-theme on 31-39), frozen (40-79, castle floors 71-79), and lava (80-119, crimson 111-119). Ore follows depth: Copper appears from floor 2, Iron and Jade from 41, and Gold, Rubies and Magma Geodes from 81. Mystic Stones - the best Prismatic Shard source - begin around floor 101.

The elevator saves a checkpoint every 5th floor, and every 10th floor is a safe reward floor with a chest: floor 20 holds a Steel Smallsword, 60 a Crystal Dagger, 90 the Obsidian Edge, 100 a free Stardrop, and 120 the Skull Key that unlocks Skull Cavern (and Junimo Kart in the saloon). Monster populations scale from green slimes and bugs up to skeletons, shadow brutes and squid kids - and once you first reach floor 120, most monsters everywhere become permanently stronger.

Elevators, Ladders and Infested Floors

Ladders down spawn three ways: pre-placed when a floor loads (95% of floors), dropped by rocks (a base 2% chance per rock, rising as fewer rocks remain, plus 4% more when no enemies are left), or dropped by monsters (15% per kill). Daily luck nudges all of these, which is why lucky days feel smoother. Infested floors have no rocks at all - kill everything to spawn the ladder - and consuming Oil of Garlic prevents infestations entirely.

Staircases (99 Stone, Mining 2) warp you down one floor instantly and are the correct response to a brutal infested or dungeon floor when you are just passing through. Coal minecarts on floors 12, 18, 28, 38 and beyond hold 6 coal each and refresh at the start of every year - a reliable coal drip in Year 1.

Weapons, Boots and Bombs

The weapon ladder in one line: Rusty Sword (free from Marlon) -> mine-chest swords (Steel Smallsword on floor 20, Obsidian Edge on 90) -> Lava Katana (25,000g at the Adventurer's Guild) -> Galaxy Sword. The Galaxy Sword is a level 13 sword with 60-80 damage, +2% crit chance and +4 speed, earned by holding a Prismatic Shard and standing on the center tile between the Three Pillars in the Calico Desert. Claiming it also unlocks the Galaxy Hammer and Galaxy Dagger at the Guild, and every Galaxy weapon can be forged into an Infinity weapon on Ginger Island.

Boots matter as much as weapons: pick up Leather Boots (floor 10), Tundra Boots (50), Firewalker Boots (80) and Space Boots (110). Buy bombs from the Dwarf once you can read Dwarvish - Cherry Bomb 450g, Bomb 1,000g, Mega Bomb 1,600g - and never enter deep content without healing; Cheese remains the community-standard cheap heal.

Luck and Timing Your Dives

Check the Fortune Teller channel on TV every morning. 'The spirits are very happy today' is the top luck tier; 'the spirits are very displeased' is the bottom. Daily luck (and luck buffs from food like Lucky Lunch +3, Spicy Eel +1, Pumpkin Soup +2, or Magic Rock Candy +5) increases ladder rates, geode and coal drops, treasure room odds in the Skull Cavern, fishing treasure chests, and even your chance of double crop harvests.

Plan around it: save mine pushes, Skull Cavern runs and shard hunts for good-luck days; spend bad days farming, fishing, building or gifting. The classic deep-dive stack is a luck food plus Coffee or Triple Shot Espresso - drink buffs stack with food buffs - then straight down.

Skull Cavern Strategy: Stairs, Shafts, Bombs

Skull Cavern sits in the desert, unlocked with the Skull Key once the bus is running. It has infinite floors, no elevator, and time that runs 25% slower inside (one in-game hour lasts 54 real seconds instead of 43), so a full day goes further. Iridium frequency rises steadily with depth - rapid descent is the entire game.

Two tools dominate: bombs and Staircases. Bomb rock clusters to force ladders and shafts; drop a Staircase when a floor is barren or hostile. A shaft (20% of ladder spawns) drops you 3-15 floors at once for 3 health per floor skipped - always jump shafts on lucky days. Farm Jade in Crystalariums all week and trade it to the Desert Trader on Sundays: 1 Jade = 1 Staircase, which is how veterans arrive with hundreds pre-stacked.

Know your enemies: Serpents (150 HP, fast), Iridium Bats from floor 51, Iridium Crabs from floor 26, and Mummies - knock a Mummy down, then finish it with any bomb (or a Crusader-enchanted weapon). Bring a Warp Totem: Farm so you never pass out at 2am holding a backpack of iridium.

Floor 100 and Qi's Challenges

Floor 100 of Skull Cavern always contains a treasure chest, and after reading Secret Note #10, Mr. Qi himself waits there for a cutscene that opens his quest chain. Floors 200 and 300 contain two and three guaranteed chests respectively - the rewards scale all the way up.

Once Qi's Walnut Room is open on Ginger Island, his repeatable Special Orders turn the cavern into endgame sport: 'Qi's Hungry Challenge' asks you to reach floor 100 without eating anything for 25 Qi Gems (buff food eaten beforehand still works), and 'Skull Cavern Invasion' asks for floor 100 with empowered monsters for 40 Qi Gems. Completing the Invasion for the first time unlocks a statue at the cavern entrance that toggles permanent hard mode, where dangerous monsters can drop Galaxy Souls, Radioactive Ore and Qi Gems.

What 1.6 Added to Both Dungeons

Version 1.6 quietly restocked both dungeons. The Mines gained a Gold Slime that drops gold when killed, while crates and barrels can now drop Trinkets, Mystery Boxes, skill books and seasonal raccoon seeds. Completing 'Danger in the Deep' or toggling the Shrine of Challenge on floor 120 re-themes the entire Mines with dangerous monsters and Radioactive Nodes. Patch 1.6.4 added 20 alternate floor layouts and made you invulnerable for one second each time you descend a floor - which quietly removes a lot of cheap bat deaths.

In Skull Cavern, treasure chests gained richer loot pools (Artifact Troves, Cinder Shards, Seafoam Pudding, Spicy Eel and Golden Mystery Boxes), and Trinkets with the Combat Mastery slot give runs a whole new power axis - a Fairy Box trinket even heals you through no-eat challenge runs.
